During standard aircraft maintenance, it is sometimes necessary to clean the wiring, remove FOD (foreign object debris), and / or clean the equipment near the wiring (almost anywhere on the machine). This process must be handled with care and attention to detail.

Cleaning should follow the manufacturer's recommendations where applicable. When information on the cleaning procedure is not available, a natural fiber rag cleaned with isopropionic alcohol should be used as a cleaning agent. Wiring harnesses must be clean and do not rub vigorously as this can damage the insulation of the wire. Care should be taken when performing any maintenance on live systems.

In addition, metal corrosion detection is an important part of the EWIS part cleaning process. Since corrosion can have a significant impact on system performance, proactive actions are critical.

When cleaning the aircraft by pressure washing, passengers must take care to avoid damage to exposed electrical and EWIS components. High pressure nozzles can quickly degrade EWIS components such as the insulation of wires and connectors. Of particular importance are the leading and trailing wing edges, the wheel wells and the landing gear. When practical, protect EWIS components (eg wiring and connectors) before pressure washing. If an aerosol cleaning solution is used, the area should be washed to remove any residue, as prolonged exposure may lead to deterioration of the wire insulation.

EWIS cleaning requires extreme care and the use of appropriate maintenance procedures to ensure safe and reliable operation.
