Established in 1918 as an Army artillery training ground, Camp Bragg was to be a training school for artillerymen going to the front lines of World War I in Europe. Camp Bragg was named after Civil War Confederate General Braxton Bragg. Bragg was renamed Fort Bragg in 1922 due to its increased size and role in the US Army.

Despite its massive size, Fort Bragg was briefly closed several times over the past century. When its deactivation was considered in early 1950, the 82nd Airborne Division's permanent station at Fort Bragg kept the base at full capacity. In late 1951, the XVIII Airborne Corps found a home at Fort Bragg, as well as the US Army's newly established Physical Warfare Center.
