In 1901, the Union Lumber Company incorporated the National Steamship Company to transport lumber, passengers, and supplies. The only means of communication for basic amenities and utilities such as sugar and coffee was delivered by steamships. In 1905, the California Western Railroad and Navigation Company was incorporated and plans were made to extend the rail line all the way to Willits, where the Pacific Northwest railroads would connect to San Francisco.
An earthquake in 1906 started a fire that threatened the sawmill and the town. Within the city itself, all brick buildings were damaged. Only two of them were not completely destroyed. Many frame homes have closed. The fire burned an entire city block between Franklin, Redwood, and McPherson Streets and the West Side of Franklin. A block of West Franklin burned about a half block behind the intersection of Redwood and Franklin.
In the twelve months following the earthquake, the city's reconstruction was completed. Coincidentally, the earthquake brought real prosperity to Fort Bragg as mills provided lumber for the rebuilding of San Francisco, and log ships returning from San Francisco were loaded with bricks used to rebuild Fort Bragg.
With the new prosperity, the railway to Wiltshire was completed and in 1912 the first tourists arrived at Fort Bragg. By 1916, Fort Bragg had become a popular place to visit and settle.
