.44 Magnum is a great round Shown from left to right are the 9mm Parabellum, .45ACP, .44 Magnum, and .500 S&W Magnum.
The S&W Model 29 has evolved through ten different versions since the mid-1950s. The guns had always been popular, but the release of Dirty Harry in 1971 made it difficult for dealers to stock them. Although later pistols and cartridges were eclipsed by such beasts as the .454 Casule and the .500 S&W Magnum, in its day the .44 Magnum was truly the greatest handgun in the world.
The Model 29 starts with a carbon steel frame and includes a fixed front sight with an adjustable rear sight. The single/double action system is expansive and strives to sport the same slickly-oiled mechanics that Smith has proven to be true. The 6.5-inch carbon steel barrel gives the gun an overall length of one foot The Model 29 was produced in various barrel lengths, but this is the Harry

If you must ask me man, but I am not a particularly fun experience shooting a Model 29 .44 Magnum. The Model 29 will push the less powerful .44 Special rounds as well, and those are really fun. Full power .44 Magnum loads, however, peg my soundmeter in short order.

It will clear a person's head in a lime The Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum has a distinctly American backstory. Introduced to many fans as "the world's most powerful handgun" in 1955, the .44 arrived at a time when we were adding muscle and power to cars, airplanes, and rocket launchers. 44 Mag The successor to the former Secretary, the .357 Mag. The revolver now known as the Model 29 was introduced simply as the ".44 Magnum" and was a superior product in every respect. Such events were followed by the introduction of the "Registered Magnum" which accompanied the release of the .357 Mag. The .44 Magnum cartridge was indeed a success; Hunters now have an arm that can deliver more power than the popular rifle of the frontier era
The new Smith .44 was an immediate success and became the hallmark of Smith & Wesson. Even now, the clothing on which Smith & Wesson handguns are shipped is printed with the familiar profile of the original .44 Magnum. Collectors and shooters have a passion for the early "Pre-Model 29". 44 Magnum N-frame There is something particularly incredible about them, and the prices reflect that, with early revolvers selling for two or three times the price of later models. Legendary gun writer Elmer Keith aggressively lobbied for the .44 Mag Cartridges for many years, and he said this in the 1966 edition of his definitive book
: “[The Magnum] is a precision, both for accuracy and careful fit and look In fact, I think this is Smith & Wesson's best product ever "
Keith was quoted by S&W president who described the new Magnum as the only quality, handcrafted, rifle off the assembly line. Keep in mind that this was at a time when many saw it as the "Golden Age" of S&W, so the Super Level of that era must have been special.
Recently I was able to fire the five-bolt .44 Magnum wide open. This Smith was one of hundreds of 4" models produced in the first year, most of the first thousand sporting heavy, ribbed 6½" barrels. This particular revolver has been returned to the factory for a nickel refinish and when I first tested it it was not fired after the refinish. Nickel can look a little off on many guns, but, in my book, the Nickel 4" N-Frame is one of the nicest guns ever. This model has a level of polish, fit and quality. Action that is super level. All aspects of the time.

There are several features that would follow the "pre-29" or "five-screw" Smith in later years. Arguably none of these problems, but as a group, they add to the richness of the whole There are counters, recessed-rim chambers that completely enclose the hair Repeating serial numbers on the back of the cylinder and inside the ejector-rod casing add a touch of class. These things don't just end up together; They were married. The screw at the top of the plate and the curve of the guard speak to the front core assembly - not necessarily better but different, and the difference over time.
When discussing the Smiths of this era, the well-respected gunsmith said that by today's standards all guns—especially high-end models like the .44 Magnum—were actually hand-made and equipped with "prestige woodwork parts," as the early advertisements said. This combination is the magic that makes Golden Era guns so special However, hand-fitting/honing definitely pays off
